Kinsale Hotels & Guesthouses

Photos: Kinsale's hotels and guesthouses include (top row) the Blue Haven Hotel; Quayside House; Captain's Quarters; (middle row) Actions Hotel and Perryville House; and (bottom row) Trident Hotel.

As a picturesque harbour town and the gourmet capital of Ireland, Kinsale is a popular destination year-round. Part of Kinsale's charm is in the fact that there are no major chain lodgings but rather an assortment of small hotels, inns, guesthouses and many B&Bs. The places featured below offer all rooms with private bath/shower ("en suite") unless otherwise noted. Here are some of my favorites.

Kinsale Hotels & Guesthouses

Actons Hotel, Pier Rd., Kinsale, tel. 021-477-2135; fax 021-477-2231; e-mail: information@actonshotelkinsale.com. Mention Kinsale, and Actons comes to mind. Set back on its own grounds overlooking the marina, this long-established 3-star hotel is a unique waterfront resort — a combination of six four-story houses of different styles (some with bay windows) that have been joined, renovated, and refurbished. Consequently, the 76 guest rooms vary in size and shape, but most are large, airy, and overlook the water and well-tended rose gardens. Facilities include a nautically-themed restaurant, a contemporary bar/bistro, and a leisure centre with heated swimming pool, sauna, gym, and solarium. Closed: 4-30 January. €€ to €€€€  Web site:  www.actonshotelkinsale.com

Blue Haven Hotel, 3-4 Pearse St., Kinsale, tel. 021-477-2209; fax 021-477-4268; e-mail: info@bluehavenkinsale.com. Positioned on the site of the old fish market along Kinsale's main thoroughfare, this small 3-star hotel is the town focal point, with a popular old world bar and seafood restaurant on the premises. The 17 rooms, which occupy the upper floors of two buildings, are decorated with antiques and unique period pieces, many of which reflect Kinsale's heritage as a wine port. Front rooms face the main street; back rooms overlook a walled garden. Facilities include a bar and restaurant. €€ to €€€  Web sitewww.bluehavenkinsale.com

Captain's Quarters, 5 Denis Quay, Kinsale, Co. Cork; tel. 021-477-4549; fax 021-477-4944; e-mail: captquarters@eircom.net. As its name implies, this 150-year-old Georgian townhouse has been turned into a 3-star guesthouse with a maritime atmosphere including a collection of captain's pictures and nautical memorabilia and many of the rooms have harbour views. It sits less than a block from the marina, in a quiet street around the corner from Acton's Hotel or O'Connell Street. Owners Aiste and Juste Ungulaityte offer 6 guestrooms (4 en suite) including ground floor and family rooms. Each room has TV, phone, hairdryer, and coffee/tea-maker. Closed: 1-28 February. €  Web site: www.captains-kinsale.com

Kilcaw House, R. 600, Kinsale, Co. Cork; tel. 021-477-4155; fax 021-477-4755; e-mail: info@kilcawhouse.com. Set back from the main Cork-Kinsale road about 1.5 miles from Kinsale, this purpose-built 3-star guesthouse is nestled amid 7 acres of gardens and grounds, with plenty of room for children to roam around but not an ideal location for walking into town. The interior has a traditional ambiance with open fireplaces, wooden floors and antique pine furnishings. Proprietors Henry and Christina Mitchell offer 7 spacious guestrooms, each equipped with multi-channel TV, phone, and coffee/tea-maker. €  Web site: www.kilcawhouse.com

Harbour Lodge , Scilly, Kinsale, tel. 021-477-2376; fax 021-477-2675; e-mail: relax@harbourlodge.com. Perched on high ground overlooking the marina, about a 10-minute walk from town, this 4-star guesthouse has a bright and airy décor with lots of wide-windowed views of the water. Five of the 8 guest rooms have balconies facing the harbour while the others overlook the garden. It is located in a residential neighborhood, but proprietors Raoul and Seiko de Gendre (who also own a restaurant in the town) provide guests with private car parking. €€ to €€€   Web sitewww.harbourlodge.com

Perryville House, Pearse St. at Long Quay, Kinsale, Co. Cork; tel. 021-477-2731; fax 021-477-2298; e-mail: sales@perryville.iol.ie. Non-smokers, take note — this is an all-non-smoking inn — Perryville House, a cheery pink-toned guesthouse along the harbourfront in Kinsale. It offers 28 rooms, all with bath and many with views of the harbour. The décor is decidedly Victorian with frilly curtains, fabric wall coverings, tapestries, and antiques. Perched on the eastern edge of town, Perryville is an easy walk from the quays and all the main streets of Kinsale. Closed: November - March. €€€ to €€€€  Web sitewww.perryvillehouse.com

Nestled on private park grounds along the pier road opposite the marina, this 3-star guesthouse enjoys the best of both worlds - overlooking the water yet within a one-block walk of the town centre. Hostess Mary Cotter offers 6 guest rooms, each with TV, phone, and coffee/tea-maker. Guests also enjoy the use of gated private parking. €  Web site:  www.euroka.com/quayside

Trident Hotel , World's End, Kinsale, Co. Cork; tel. 021-477-2301; fax 021-477-4173; email: info@tridenthotel.com. Without a doubt, this hotel enjoys a prime location in Kinsale, on the water overlooking the marina, making it an unrivalled choice in Kinsale. In 2005, the hotel completed a major refurbishment and expansion (going from 58 to 75 rooms), and now all rooms are first-rate and up-to-date - and most have views of the harbour. On-site facilities include a leisure centre (no swimming pool, but sauna, steam room, gym and Jacuzzi), a maritime-themed pub, and a restaurant with the best views in town and exceptionally good food for a hotel kitchen. Parking is free for guests. Closed: 24 – 26 December. €€ to €€€€
